LETTER FROM THE PYA PRESIDENT
Thank you for taking the time to visit the Port Washington Youth Activities (PYA) website. On behalf of the board of directors, I want to welcome everyone to the 2010 season. PYA is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization formed to promote the development of local youth through the participation in sports. We teach teamwork and individual responsibility in an atmosphere of respect and sportsmanship. While we place emphasis on the development of sports skills, our primary mission is to develop character and an understanding of how participation in sports can prepare one for success in all endeavors.
The PYA Board of Directors, comprised of 30 volunteers, and our Executive Director, have been hard at work ensuring that the programs, our facilities and coaches are the best there is for our children. We are proud of all we have accomplished since PYA was established in 1963 and could not have done it without the help of many through their donations of time, money, ideas and suggestions. There is nothing better than going to Lions Field or to one of the local school gyms and seeing the them filled with boys and girls playing one of the many sports PYA offers. We are committed to giving children various opportunities to play in many sports and activities, and we want them to develop the basic skills, leadership, learn fundamentals, and understand the social dynamics of teamwork and sportsmanship. PYA provides these opportunities to everyone and this season will be no exception.
The number of participants in PYA has increased substantially from our beginnings in 1963. Today we have a top rate facility at Lion’s Field which is the envy of all who have had the privilege to play there, offer over 11 sports programs to our over 3,000 participants, and provide travel opportunities for hundreds of boys and girls each summer. This past summer we fielded over 15 different travel teams and hosted various camps including basketball, wrestling, lacrosse, baseball and softball providing opportunities for hundreds of boys and girls to better their skills in the summer and have fun at the same time. This year we will continue to work closely with our town’s middle and senior high school sports teams through clinics and mentoring for our young athletes, and will take advantage of the relationships we have formed with staff from sports programs at various local colleges for their support and guidance.
While we accomplish a lot each year it takes time and money, as you may not know, PYA receives no tax generated financial support from the town or county. All funds received to support our facilities and programs come from modest fees and through fund raising. In order to keep our programs and facilities the best they can be, please consider donating time or making a tax deductible donation. You can be assured whatever it is you give our children will benefit.
Most importantly, please take the time to review with your son or daughter the PYA Code of Sports Conduct for players, coaches and parents located on this website. The Code of Sports Conduct has guided our program for many years and provides the foundation our atmosphere of respect and sportsmanship.
I am proud of all we have done to make PYA the best youth sports organization around and I look forward to another great season.
Respectfully,
Anthony Cavallaro
President
