PYA Legends Win District

On Monday July 12th, the PYA Legends baseball 11U team captured the Williamsport Tournament District 28 Championship, defeating the Williston Park Patriots by a score of 5-1.

The Patriots drew first blood scoring one run in the first inning. The Legends came back quickly when Peter Kirgis tripled and stole home in the bottom of the 3rd to tie it at 1-1.   Pitching and defense took over in the next two innings as Andrew Adelhardt was dealing from the mound.  Ryan Delmonte, Robert Jester, Robbie Marx, and Brendan Finnerty all made great plays in the field.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jester and Jordan Chang drew walks, and Kirgis singled for his third hit of the game, loading the bases.  Delmonte then hit a sacrifice fly to center and Chang scored the go-ahead run. Heads up base-running on the play by Jester produced another run. Marx then singled and drove Kirgis in. Adelhardt followed with another single to drive in Marx, making it 5-1.

Pitching and defense by Port Washington sent the Patriots down in order in the 6th inning to earn the win. Legends’ manager, Neil Jester said after the game, “It was a total team effort throughout the tournament. Every player contributed, and that is why we won. The boys worked hard. They deserved it.”

The victory allowed the Legends to advance to sectional play where they will face off with five other District Champions on Long Island. Good luck Legends!
